Almost 10 years in the making, the Whitcomb Street Project forms the works and efforts carried out to bring the new RWS Gallery at Whitcomb Street to fruition.
The story began in 1823, only a short number of years after the Society was formed, they were offered a lease at 6 Pall Mall East. They gladly accepted and remained there for 115 years, showing their paintings in exhibitions in the gallery spaces. Years went on and the Society's base changed a number of times, with their most recent home being at Bankside Gallery, where they remain to this day.
In 2015 the RWS was approached by the developer Hobhouse, who were looking for an Arts related charity to occupy part of a building on Whitcomb Street. Research had found that Pall Mall East where the RWS had shown their paintings so many years ago in the 19th Century, was in the same building. The RWS were delighted to accept and following several years of negotiations, fundraising, renovations, a global pandemic and a soft launch, the RWS Gallery at Whitcomb Street opened it's doors for the inaugural exhibition, RWS NOW on Monday 5th June 2023. The new RWS Gallery will serve as an exhibition and event space to complement the Society's existing home at Bankside Gallery. -
