This exhibition commemorates the 40th Anniversary of WilkinsonEyre, the architectural practice founded in London by Chris Wilkinson and Jim Eyre.
Both founders began working together with the shared belief that technology and science link to visual art through architecture. A consistent thread through the work of the practice is the fusion of engineering with refined detail, creating buildings and structures that are crisp, functional, and stand the test of time. Many WilkinsonEyre projects have become popular symbols of regeneration, fostering a strong and positive identity for their host communities.
From early commissions in the transport sector and a series of celebrated bridges, the practice now works around the world in a diverse range of sectors. These include tall buildings on prominent city centre sites, destination attractions, and vital infrastructure. In 2022 the practice delivered one of the most important restoration projects in London’s recent history with the reopening of Battersea Power Station as the centrepiece of a new riverside neighbourhood. The scheme is one of a growing portfolio of retrofit projects that demonstrate the firm’s commitment to lowering construction’s carbon impact through the retention of existing fabric.
Chris Wilkinson took great pride in his election to the Royal Academy in 2006, fulfilling a longstanding belief in the power of art to improve architecture, and he was a great supporter of the Royal Watercolour Society, contributing the services of the practice pro-bono to design the RWS Gallery at Whitcomb Street, where this exhibition will be staged.
Despite Chris’ sad death in December 2021, the practice’s future is now secure, entrusted to a team of longstanding employees united by a belief in the power of architecture to improve lives, manage the equitable distribution of energy and resources, and lift the spirits.
