David Hamilton was born in Leeds and studied at the Regional College of Art Bradford and Goldsmiths College. He taught Drawing & Ceramics in the Fine Art Departments of Lancaster and Portsmouth Colleges of Art followed by the Royal College of Art, Department of Ceramics and Glass becoming Professor, with a period as Wedgwood Group Design Director, then Pro-Rector.
Although the practice and teaching of ceramics has been the mainstay of David Hamilton's professional life, drawing and painting has always been an integral part of his work, both as an end in itself and in the process of developing ideas.
